The Orders of Love: Bert Hellinger's Core Principles Explained

Bert Hellinger identified three underlying 'orders' that, when honored, allow love to flow freely within a family system — and when violated, tend to create the patterns constellation work addresses.

1. The Order of Belonging

Everyone who is part of a family system has an equal right to belong — including those who are difficult to love: an estranged relative, a family member who caused harm, a child lost to miscarriage or early death. When someone is excluded from the family's acknowledgment, the system tends to seek balance by having another member unconsciously represent them.

2. The Order of Hierarchy (Precedence)

Those who came first in the system — earlier generations, older siblings, a first partner — hold a certain precedence. Problems often arise when this order is unconsciously reversed: a child trying to parent a parent, or a younger sibling trying to outrank an elder in ways the system resists.

3. The Order of Balance (Give and Take)

Healthy relationships require a balance of giving and receiving. Systems become strained when the balance tips too far — chronic over-giving, refusing to receive, or an imbalance of sacrifice between partners or generations.

Why This Matters for You

Most patterns constellation work addresses trace back to a violation of one of these three orders. Recognizing which order is out of balance in your own situation is often the first, clarifying step toward resolving it.
