The Nervous System and Somatic Healing: The Basics Everyone Should Know

You don't need a clinical background to understand the basics of your own nervous system — and understanding it makes somatic and energy work far more intuitive.

Fight, Flight, Freeze — and Fawn

When faced with a threat, your nervous system automatically chooses a survival response: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn (appeasing to stay safe). If the response can't complete — if you couldn't fight, flee, or fully collapse and later recover — the activation can stay lodged in the body.

Why Talking Isn't Always Enough

The nervous system's survival responses live in older, non-verbal parts of the brain and body. This is why purely cognitive approaches sometimes leave a felt sense of stuckness even after real intellectual understanding has been reached.

How Somatic and Energy Work Helps

Body-based approaches work directly with sensation, breath and the body's own capacity to complete an interrupted response — often through small, gentle movements, shakes, or waves of release that mirror what animals do naturally after a threat passes.

A Note on Safety

Somatic release should always happen at a pace the body can tolerate. If you have a significant trauma history, working alongside a licensed trauma therapist in addition to complementary somatic and energy work is strongly recommended.
