Excluded Family Members: The Hidden Dynamics They Leave Behind

Every family has someone who isn't spoken about — a relative cut off after a scandal, a child given up for adoption, a member disowned over a life choice the family disapproved of. In systemic work, exclusion rarely stays contained.

Who Gets Excluded

A relative who left the family religion, culture, or country of origin. Someone who caused real harm and was cut off in response. A child placed for adoption. A family member who died by suicide or under circumstances considered shameful at the time.

How Exclusion Echoes Forward

Systemically, the family field tends to seek balance — a later family member may unconsciously identify with the excluded person, repeating some version of their fate, struggle, or even literal life circumstances, without any conscious knowledge of the original story.

The Resolution Isn't Necessarily Reconciliation

Healing an exclusion doesn't always mean re-establishing a real-world relationship with the excluded person — sometimes that's appropriate, sometimes it isn't or isn't possible. The systemic resolution is internal: acknowledging the person belongs to the family story, whatever happened, and giving them a place in the system's memory.
